About Garnets and Their Lore

The Garnet has been coveted for thousand of years.
This rich red stone was once thought to activate deep eternal love, to ground
and protect the wearer, to promote good health, and even to cure a fever.
Garnets were often worn for protection when traveling.
Throughout the years this gemstone has symbolized many
things including fire, faith, truth, grace, constancy, and fidelity.

Garnets were said to prevent skin disease when worn on the body
and to assure the wearer of love, faithfulness, and safety from wounds
as well as to protect the wearer from evil and terrifying dreams.
It was thought that when danger approached, the stone would lose its brilliance.

A garnet's hardness is 6.5 - 7.5 moh
It is the Birthstone for January and the
Token for 11th Wedding anniversary

It is said that King Solomon wore a large red garnet along with eleven other
magical gems (representing the 12 steps of Jacob's Ladder) in his breast
plate to help him win battles and to keep him in touch with the deity.
In the 13th century, garnets were worn to repel insects, evil spirits and the evil eye of others.
In Egyptian times, garnets were taken into the tombs with the dead as payment to
the gods for safe passage through the nether world.

The word "garnet" is believed to have come from the Greek word "granatum,"
or pomegranate seed, because ancient jewelry makers grouped the tiny
gemstones in a cluster that resembled the seed-filled fruit. Deep red in
color, almandine garnet is the most popular gem in the garnet family.
Occasionally deep enough red to appear black, almandine garnet is sometimes
hollowed in order to let light shine through the stone, highlighting its red
color. Garnet displays the greatest variety of color of any mineral,
occurring in every color except blue.

Garnet Stretch Woven Bracelet

Tumbled genuine garnets are woven into a wide stretch bracelet that will fit a medium (6.5 to 7.25 inch) wrist very comfortably. Bracelet is approximately 1.5 inches wide but varies due to size of the stones. Very heavy! Weighs 3.3 ounces or over 93 grams. Garnets are refreshingly cold to the touch and we love the way this heavy bracelet looks on the wrist. Fashion forward and sold in boutiques at much higher prices. Nice dark garnet stones!

Vintage Garnet Sterling Ring

Beautiful old sterling ring circa 1915 has a petty filigree setting and is a size 6.75. As you can see in the photos (click them to enlarge), the ring is ever so slightly out of round and there is one side that has a little dent in the setting. Neither little flaw is a problem, nor do they show when worn. The setting is 7.5mm or 5/16th inch high. This vintage ring looks great on the ring or index finger.

Garnet Glass Cabochon Cufflinks

Gold filled Swank cufflinks were sold to us as garnets but we don't think SWANK these real garnets so are selling them as garnet colored. Regardless, they are beautiful Deco style vintage cufflinks and will look fabulous when worn. Gorgeous red glass(?) stones are 3/4 inch by 9/16th by 5/16th inch tall. Gold fill is rich!

Garnet Art Deco Cufflinks

Gold filled Art Deco Bohemian garnet cufflinks are marked 12K GF and signed by Swank. Perfect except that the bullet tip on one side is missing or pushed into the bar. (see pictures) You cannot see into the bar so perhaps, the end piece is just tilted inside the bar. Doesn't show when worn but if you are a perfectionist, these aren't for you. Split sphere tops are over 5/8 inch in diameter and have a high profile. Classic!

Garnet & Marcasite Bracelet

Stunning genuine garnet and marcasite bracelet set in sterling is 8 INCHES LONG. I bought it planning to have two links removed and made into pierced earrings but have never gotten to the task so passing it along to wear as is or have shortened by your jeweler. It comes out perfectly sized for a medium wrist if you have two links removed and then you can make those links into earrings. There are 20 large rectangular garnet stones. Each stone is about one carat as I recall. A beauty of a bracelet for large wrist or for shortening and having matching earrings made to go with!

Garnet Earrings

Earrings of small garnet round seed beads mined in India look great by themselves or when worn with other garnet jewelry. The garnets measure about 1.75 inches long and counting the ear wires, they dangle about 2.25 inches long. Genuine garnets are hand cut and strung and may vary slightly in shapes and size.

Garnet Rope Choker Necklace

Genuine garnet seed bead necklace slips over your head and the length adjusts by moving the woven slip bead on the braided and tasseled cord. Length of garnets is 12 inches and the carat weight is about 100 carats of garnets. The total length of the necklace adjusts from 15 inches to 29 inches depending upon where you adjust the slide bead. Slip over head to wear. Cord and tassels are hand made and not perfect but that adds to the charm of these Indian garnets from Asia.

Large Garnet Cherub Locket

Six genuine faceted garnets are set into this large and lovely sterling Nouveau style locket which measures 1.25 inches long not including the jump ring or bale. Locket is 1.25 inches wide when closed. Will hold one or two photos that are about one inch tall. Marked 925 for sterling and ready to hang from your neck chain, ribbon or velvet cord. Probably a bit large for most bracelets so we recommend this locket for a necklace.

Gemstone Garnet Ring

Attractive gemstone garnet ring is a size 7 1/4.
Marked "925" for sterling.
Set in an attractive tall setting, the garnets are a beautiful color and do appear darker on your finger than as above with light shining through the open back setting. Art Deco Garnet Tie Bar and Cufflinks Set

Art Deco set from the 1930's is marked 1/40 10K Rolled Gold and was made by the old SWANK Company, in business since 1897. There are 5 pointed cabochon stones, each hand cut. The tie bar measures 2 5/8 inches long. Cufflinks are 1 14/ inches long. Lovely condition, very wearable set! All pieces signed and marked.

Garnet Triangular Cut Necklace

Triangular cut natural garnet necklace is over 100 carats and measures 20 inches long. Clasp is marked "Silver" and is gold vermeil over silver. The way the triangles of garnets lay makes the necklace about an inch wide so it is sure to be noticed. Color is rich and beautiful and each stone is slightly different.

Bohemian Garnet Horseshoe Pin

Very old gilded brass horseshoe pin has a C clasp and 18 rose cut garnets that were hand cut. Measures about 1.25 inches long and wide and no longer perfectly shaped after 80 plus years of wear. We love it as is! Order "GA- #031horseshoe," SOLD.

Bohemian Garnet Bar Pin

Old bar pin with hand cut, low grade Bohemian garnets measures 1 8 inches long and appears gold plated but can't tell for sure. Circa early 1900's. Pearls have been replaced many years ago and are faux. Sold as found and a nice addition to your very vintage pin collection.

Garnet Fob with Gold Filled Locket

Wonderful GARNET and gold filled Bliss Brothers locket is attached to a hand woven silk grosgrain ribbon fob and best of all, there is a deep red mine cut Bohemian garnet setting! While the locket could be worn on a chain, we'd surely hate to see it separated from its original setting and the pretty garnet stone so we have left it as found. Ribbon with swivel is 6 3/4 inches long and the locket is 15/16th inch in diameter. Inside it retains both frames, two celluloid covers and is marked with BB Co for Bliss Brothers. Will hold two photos, each about 3/4 inch in diameter and is hand etched with the Roman numeral for 15 on each interior side. View the back. The antique ribbon is a bit frayed at the edges. Sterling garnet locket is not only heart shaped, so is the garnet center stone! Suspended from a 24 inch Italian sterling chain, the locket, including the bale dangles 1 1/8 inches long and is just under 3/4 inch wide. 27.5 inches long and about 1/2 inch wide, this necklace has about 32 beads to the inch and slips on over the head. No clasp. strung on clear cord. Sterling Oval Garnet Locket

Four genuine oval garnets are set into this pretty sterling locket sterling Nouveau style locket which measures over one inch long and 3/4 inch wide. Will hold one or two photos that are about 7/8th inch tall. Marked 925 for sterling and with a maker's mark that we think is a Greek Omega. Does not come wth a chain. Garnets look to be each about .75 carat but we have no way to weigh the stones.
Back smooth and ready to engrave but there is a small mark or dent on the back that doesn't show when worn. Contemporary.

These vintage garnet stones are perfectly cut into similar rosettes. Vintage necklace measures just 14 inches long so you will need a slender neck to wear this comfortably. Circa 1935, this necklace is gold wash over brass. Note the older ring clasp finding.

Rose gold pendant set with Bohemian rose cut garnets and accented with faceted crystals suspended from rose gold 12K filled chain that measures 19 inches long is very old. Pretty etching on pendant. Garnets are bezel set with saw teeth setting.

Genuine natural garnet rope necklace of round and trapezoid beads. Rich dark reddish color. Measures 36 inches long. No clasp, necklace slips over the head. Each cluster of round beads has nine 3mm beads and there are 53 stations that include a total of 477 rounded natural garnets. The trapezoid like beads number about 52 - 54 and each is different and about 5mm long. A large selection of natural garnets for beading or to be worn as is. Marked "Sterling." with gold wash. Rose cut stones, Screw backs. Each measures 5/8 inches long and 3/8 inches wide at the top. Circa 1920.

Bohemian Garnet Floral Pin These garnets may be foiled, giving them a brighter appearance. The petals are rose cut with the floral center stones having high tables instead of rose cuts. Signed, "Czechoslovakia." The floral spray measures 1 1/4 inches wide.

Bohemian Garnet Floral Pair These garnets are also foiled and came from the same collector as the floral above. Each measures just under 1 1/2 inches tall.

1920 -1930 Garnet Necklace

Vintage Bohemian Garnet Necklace measures 15 and 7/8 inches long. Gold washed brass findings with open back settings as was common in the era. Each hand cut stone is slightly different and you can see this easily, especially in the garnet beads along the chain. Hidden push (shovel) clasp under garnet, center back.

1920 -1930 Garnet Bracelet

Beautiful garnet bangle bracelet with clasp is oval for a comfortable fit. Should fit most wrists up to a 7 1/4 inch circumference. Bracelet measures 2 3/8 inches inside diameter at the widest part. Pretty rose cut garnets are set in gilded brass.
