About Garnets and Their Lore

The Garnet has been coveted for thousand of years.
This rich red stone was once thought to activate deep eternal love, to ground
and protect the wearer, to promote good health, and even to cure a fever.
Garnets were often worn for protection when traveling.
Throughout the years this gemstone has symbolized many
things including fire, faith, truth, grace, constancy, and fidelity.

Garnets were said to prevent skin disease when worn on the body
and to assure the wearer of love, faithfulness, and safety from wounds
as well as to protect the wearer from evil and terrifying dreams.
It was thought that when danger approached, the stone would lose its brilliance.

A garnet's hardness is 6.5 - 7.5 moh
It is the Birthstone for January and the
Token for 11th Wedding anniversary

It is said that King Solomon wore a large red garnet along with eleven other
magical gems (representing the 12 steps of Jacob's Ladder) in his breast
plate to help him win battles and to keep him in touch with the deity.
In the 13th century, garnets were worn to repel insects, evil spirits and the evil eye of others.
In Egyptian times, garnets were taken into the tombs with the dead as payment to
the gods for safe passage through the nether world.

The word "garnet" is believed to have come from the Greek word "granatum,"
or pomegranate seed, because ancient jewelry makers grouped the tiny
gemstones in a cluster that resembled the seed-filled fruit. Deep red in
color, almandine garnet is the most popular gem in the garnet family.
Occasionally deep enough red to appear black, almandine garnet is sometimes
hollowed in order to let light shine through the stone, highlighting its red
color. Garnet displays the greatest variety of color of any mineral,
occurring in every color except blue.

Large Garnet Cherub Locket

Six genuine faceted garnets are set into this large and lovely sterling Nouveau style locket which measures 1.25 inches long not including the jump ring or bale. Locket is 1.25 inches wide when closed. Will hold one or two photos that are about one inch tall. Marked 925 for sterling and ready to hang from your neck chain, ribbon or velvet cord. Probably a bit large for most bracelets so we recommend this locket for a necklace. (Dime shown for size comparison only.)

Vintage Garnet Sterling Ring

Beautiful old sterling ring circa 1915 has a petty filigree setting and is a size 6.75. As you can see in the photos (click them to enlarge), the ring is ever so slightly out of round and there is one side that has a little dent in the setting. Neither little flaw is a problem, nor do they show when worn. The setting is 7.5mm or 5/16th inch high. This vintage ring looks great on the ring or index finger.

Garnet Heart Locket with Chain

Sterling garnet locket is not only heart shaped, so is the garnet center stone! Suspended from a 24 inch Italian sterling chain, the locket, including the bale dangles 1 1/8 inches long and is just under 3/4 inch wide. Art Deco Garnet Tie Bar and Cufflinks Set

Art Deco set from the 1930's is marked 1/40 10K Rolled Gold and was made by the old SWANK Company, in business since 1897. There are 5 pointed cabochon stones, each hand cut. The tie bar measures 2 5/8 inches long. Cufflinks are 1 14/ inches long. Lovely condition, very wearable set! All pieces signed and marked.

Gemstone Garnet Ring

Attractive gemstone garnet ring is a size 7 1/4.
Marked "925" for sterling.
Set in an attractive tall setting, the garnets are a beautiful color and do appear darker on your finger than as above with light shining through the open back setting. Vintage Garnet Necklace Choker

These vintage garnet stones are perfectly cut into similar rosettes. Vintage necklace measures just 14 inches long so you will need a slender neck to wear this comfortably. Circa 1935, this necklace is gold wash over brass. Note the older ring clasp finding.

Each cluster of round beads has nine 3mm beads and there are 53 stations that include a total of 477 rounded natural garnets. Bohemian Garnet Brooch

Probably dates to 1920 - 1930. Measures 3 and 3/16 inches wide, gilded brass, hand tooled workmanship on back. Early rotating C clasp.

1934 Vintage Cufflinks Set

cuff links and tie bar dates to 1934 and is marked with patent number. Hard to capture the rose and yellow gold for internet pictures but lovely in person. Cufflinks measure about 1 1/8 inches long. Tie bar is 2 5/8 inches long. Quality set with five large genuine garnets.

Genuine Garnet Pendant in Karat Gold

Karat gold garnet cluster pendant has a "wedding cake" setting. A circle of 12 smaller mine cut garnets encircle a large oval garnet.

Marked "Sterling." with gold wash. Rose cut stones, Screw backs. Each measures 5/8 inches long and 3/8 inches wide at the top. Circa 1920.

Bohemian Garnet Floral Pin These garnets may be foiled, giving them a brighter appearance. The petals are rose cut with the floral center stones having high tables instead of rose cuts. Signed, "Czechoslovakia." The floral spray measures 1 1/4 inches wide.

Bohemian Garnet Floral Pair These garnets are also foiled and came from the same collector as the floral above. Each measures just under 1 1/2 inches tall.

1920 -1930 Garnet Necklace

Vintage Bohemian Garnet Necklace measures 15 and 7/8 inches long. Gold washed brass findings with open back settings as was common in the era. Each hand cut stone is slightly different and you can see this easily, especially in the garnet beads along the chain. Hidden push (shovel) clasp under garnet, center back.

1920 -1930 Garnet Bracelet

Beautiful garnet bangle bracelet with clasp is oval for a comfortable fit. Should fit most wrists up to a 7 1/4 inch circumference. Bracelet measures 2 3/8 inches inside diameter at the widest part. Pretty rose cut garnets are set in gilded brass.
